well sweetie pie, prehistorically, we needed all appendages to dig out grub and fingers were too soft without nails.
If you let your toenails grow out you will discover that they curve in like a talon not out like an unguent hoof.

I think biology messed up on that one. Probably because our ancestors used them as claws, but evolution hasn't really kicked in yet so we still have them. It would be really weird if we didn't ha ha.
