What are toe nails for?

What use are they, can we do without them. What are toe nails for?
I copied this from somewhere...I hope it was helpful!

';For a very long time it was speculated that toe-nails protected the nerve endings in the hands and toes from over stimulation and impact.';What are toe nails for?
haha that is a very interesting question. Toe nails are made up of a protein called Keratin. They enhance the sensitivity of the toe by acting as a counter force. They have developed over evolution on our bodies to also protect our toes from things dropping on them and infection just as a shell protects an egg. You could go without them, i m a dancer and have lost my pinky toe nails a few times but you need to take care of them way more. However, i have never lost my big toe nail so i m not sure how that would be. I am sure you could live without them but why would you want to?
The same as finger nails, to prevent the end of your fingers being crushed. Image not having toe nails! Wierd. We wouldn't be able to do so many things.
to protect the ends of our toes!!!!! imagine how sensetive your toes would be without them!
One thing's for sure they don't stop you from stubbing your toes.
