What Causes cracked toe nails?

Please help!! My brother has cracked toe nails, he's had them all his life and he is 11, now. I am really worried for him...They don't crack across, they crack downwards!! Please help!! D:What Causes cracked toe nails?
First of all for trimming never ever use a nail clipper, it will make the nails more brittle and cause cracking, after showering have him rub baby oil or some type of moisturizer on them, massage them into the nail. Best time to actually do this is before bed time when you're at rest and can leave the nails to breathe while moisturizing. Use a nail file only to trim them. There is also a product you can find at a beauty supply store, MAYBE a pharmacy would have it, it is called Tea tree oil, it helps anything from fungus to cracked hands, nails.
